Born Martin Patterson Hingle on July 19, 1924, in Miami, Florida, Pat Hingle was the son of Marvin Louise and Clarence Martin Hingle. After serving in the U.S. Navy, he earned a degree in radio broadcasting from the University of Texas in 1949. He went on to study at the American Theatre Wing and joined the Actors Studio in 1952. He married Alyce F. Dorsey, with whom he had three children, and later married Julia Wright, with whom he had two.

His film credits include "Batman," "Batman Returns," "Batman Forever," "Splendor in the Grass," "All the Way Home," "Hang 'em High," "Nevada Smith," "The Gauntlet," "Norma Rae," "Sudden Impact," "Baby Boom," "The Land Before Time," "The Quick and the Dead," "Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby," and "Undoing Time." On television, he appeared in "The Twilight Zone," "Gunsmoke," "Bonanza," "The Andy Griffith Show," "Mission: Impossible," "M*A*S*H*," "Cheers," "Murder, She Wrote," "Wings," and "Dawson's Creek."
