About
Paolo Montalban is an American actor and singer born on May 21, 1973, in Manila, Philippines, to Paul and Vivian Montalban. His family immigrated to the United States when he was approximately one year old, settling in a studio apartment on Manhattan's West Side, directly across from The Juilliard School and Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. Montalban attended St. Peter's Preparatory School and later earned a degree in pre-med psychology from Rutgers University.
Montalban is widely recognized for his role as Prince Christopher in the 1997 Disney television film Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella, in which he starred alongside Brandy in the title role, Whitney Houston as the Fairy Godmother, and Whoopi Goldberg. He subsequently reprised the role of Prince Christopher in a stage adaptation of the musical, performing opposite Deborah Gibson and later Jamie-Lynn Sigler as Cinderella, with Eartha Kitt portraying the Fairy Godmother. In 1998, People magazine named him one of its 50 Most Beautiful People.
His screen work extends across film and television. He played Kung Lao in the syndicated series Mortal Kombat: Conquest alongside Daniel Bernhardt and Kristanna Loken, and appeared as Sgt. Valera in John Dahl's The Great Raid. His additional film credits include the independent production American Adobo, in which he played Raul, as well as Just Wright starring Queen Latifah, The Adjustment Bureau, and the short film Two Weeks. On television, he guest starred in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, season eight, episode twenty, and appeared on One Life to Live. In 2024, Montalban reunited with Brandy in the Disney+ film Descendants: The Rise of Red, part of the Descendants franchise, and is set to reprise his role in the forthcoming Descendants: Wicked Wonderland.
Montalban's Broadway career spans from 1996 to 2022 and includes productions of Pacific Overtures, The King and I, Breakfast at Tiffany's, Cinderella, and Funny Girl. In The King and I, he has performed both the role of Lun Tha, the young lover, and the title role of the King, in Broadway productions as well as national engagements. Breakfast at Tiffany's featured Emilia Clarke in its cast. On March 28, 2023, Montalban succeeded Peter Francis James as Florenz Ziegfeld in the Broadway revival of Funny Girl, remaining with the production until it closed on September 3, 2023.
Beyond Broadway, Montalban has been active in regional theater and off-Broadway work. In 2022, he starred as Captain Von Trapp in the Dallas Theater Center production of The Sound of Music at the Dee and Charles Wyly Theatre. His off-Broadway credits include Two Gentlemen of Verona at Shakespeare in the Park and The Romance of Magno Rubio at Ma Yi Theater Company.
