About

Pamela Payton-Wright (November 1, 1941 – December 14, 2019) was an American actress born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, whose stage career on Broadway spanned from 1967 to 2003. She was one of four children born to Gordon Edgar Payton-Wright and Eleanor (née McKinley) Payton-Wright. After completing her secondary education at Tuscaloosa High School, she earned a degree from Birmingham–Southern College in 1963, then pursued advanced training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, where she was awarded both the Special Medal and the Edmund Gray Prize for High Comedy.

Payton-Wright built a substantial presence in American theater, appearing in numerous Broadway and off-Broadway productions throughout her career. Her Broadway credits include Something Unspoken, The Night of the Iguana, Romeo + Juliet, The Glass Menagerie, and All Over, among others. Her performance in the 1976 Broadway production of The Glass Menagerie, in which she portrayed Laura Wingfield, earned particular recognition. That same year she received the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Performance, which she had first won in 1973.

Her screen career began in 1972 with a film role as Rhonda in Corky, and she went on to accumulate additional film and television credits over the following decades. In 1979 she joined the cast of the daytime drama Another World, playing Hazel Parker for one year. She later became part of the ABC soap opera One Life to Live in 1991, originating the recurring role of Agatha "Addie" Cramer, a character described as sweet-natured but simple-minded.

Payton-Wright died on December 14, 2019, at the McKinley Health Center in Brookville, Pennsylvania, at the age of 78.
