About
Owen Gould Davis Jr. (October 6, 1907 – May 21, 1949) was an American actor born in New York City. His father was dramatist Owen Davis, whose play Icebound earned the Pulitzer Prize for drama in 1923, and his mother was actress Elizabeth Breyer. Despite his parents' opposition to his pursuing acting during his youth, Davis went on to build a career across stage, film, and television.
Davis attended The Choate School before enrolling at Yale University, where he was among the leading students in the drama program and served as captain of the boxing team. He made his Broadway debut in 1928 in Carry On, a play written by his father. His Broadway career extended through 1941 and included appearances in Times Have Changed, Spring Freshet, The Shatter'd Lamp, Jezebel, and A Saturday Night, among other productions. In the summer of 1929, he appeared as the juvenile in the stock company at the Elitch Theatre.
Davis made his screen debut alongside Walter Huston and subsequently toured on stage with Huston as well. He eventually relocated to Hollywood, where film work became his primary focus. During World War II, Davis served in the United States Army. Following the war, he transitioned into television production, with credits that included The Chevrolet Tele-Theatre.
He married Laina Muroni. Davis died on May 21, 1949, having drowned in Long Island Sound. On May 25, 1949, the Nassau County medical examiner ruled the death accidental. He was forty-one years old.
