About

Ora Alexander, born around 1896, was an American blues singer and Broadway performer whose career spanned recording work in the early 1930s and a stage appearance later that decade.

Alexander made ten recordings in New York City for Columbia Records between May 1931 and March 1932, of which eight were released. Her style fell within the classic female blues tradition, characterized by a primitive barrelhouse approach. The fact that her sessions took place across two separate visits within a single year confirms she was in New York on at least two occasions during that period, though whether she ever lived there permanently remains unknown. On the track "I'm Wild About My Patootie," her accompanist was pianist Milton Davage. For other recordings, researchers have conjectured that Alexander played her own accompaniment.

Among her released sides were two tracks noted for their ribald content. "You've Got to Save That Thing," recorded in 1931, contained the lyrics "If you want to satisfy my soul, Come on and rock me with a steady roll." The 1932 recording "I Crave Your Lovin' Every Day" included the lines "Come on daddy, get down on your knees, Sock it to my weak spot if you please." Both tracks were identified by researchers Bob Eagle and Eric LeBlanc as representative of the dirty blues style.

In 1938, Alexander appeared on Broadway in Abe Lincoln in Illinois. Little else is documented about her life outside of her musical and theatrical work.
