About

Onslow Stevens, born Onslow Ford Stevenson on March 29, 1902, in Los Angeles, California, was an American actor whose career spanned stage, film, and television. He was the son of Houseley Stevenson, a British-born character actor, and grew up in a family deeply embedded in the performing arts.

Stevens began his professional involvement in performance in 1926 at the Pasadena Community Playhouse, an institution where his entire family participated as performers, directors, and teachers. His Broadway career launched a decade later with his debut in Stage Door in 1936, and he continued appearing on Broadway through 1957. His stage credits included Dame Nature, Michael Drops In, The Burning Deck, Eastward in Eden, and A Clearing in the Woods, among other productions.

Alongside his stage work, Stevens built an extensive film career, appearing in more than 80 films. Early in that career he took on leading roles, though he transitioned predominantly into character work as the years progressed. He also worked in television, adding that medium to a professional record that crossed multiple platforms over several decades.

Stevens spent his final years in a nursing home in Van Nuys, Los Angeles. His wife reported that he was abused by fellow residents during that period and stated that his death was neither from natural causes nor an accident. He died on January 5, 1977, at the age of 74, of pneumonia following a broken hip. He was interred in an unmarked grave at Valhalla Memorial Park Cemetery in North Hollywood, California.

For his contributions to the motion picture industry, Stevens received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, located at 6349 Hollywood Boulevard.
