About
Omero Antonutti (3 August 1935 – 5 November 2019) was an Italian actor and voice actor born in Basiliano, in the province of Udine, within the Northeastern Italian region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia. Before pursuing a career in performance, Antonutti worked in shipyards. He went on to build a substantial stage career, appearing regularly at the Teatro Stabile di Trieste and the Teatro Stabile di Genova, where he frequently collaborated with director Luigi Squarzina.
Antonutti made his film debut in the 1966 production Pleasant Nights, which starred Vittorio Gassman, Gina Lollobrigida, and Ugo Tognazzi. Among his most recognized screen performances was his role in Padre Padrone, directed by the Taviani brothers. His work extended to Spain, where he appeared in El Sur under director Víctor Erice and in El Dorado directed by Carlos Saura. He also took on the role of Noah in Genesis: The Creation and the Flood.
His stage work brought him to Broadway in 1968, where he appeared in the play The Venetian.
In addition to his work as a performer, Antonutti was extensively employed as a voice actor, dubbing foreign films into Italian. He served as the regular Italian voice of Christopher Lee, providing dubbing for Lee's appearances in The Lord of the Rings film franchise, The Hobbit film franchise, and Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith. Antonutti also dubbed the voices of John Hurt, Omar Sharif, Michael Gambon, Christopher Plummer, Donald Sutherland, James Cromwell, and Robert Duvall.
Antonutti died in Udine on 5 November 2019, at the age of 84, following a prolonged illness related to cancer.
