About

Oliver Doud Byron (November 14, 1842 – October 22, 1920) was an American stage actor born in Frederick City, Maryland. He made his first stage appearance in Baltimore at the age of 14, launching a career that would span decades and bring him to Broadway from 1871 to 1913.

Byron built much of his reputation in melodrama, most notably through his work in Across the Continent, a production that enjoyed an extended run. The show was later adapted into a 1914 film by Pilot Films Corporation. His Broadway credits also included starring in A Race Across the Continent, as well as appearances in Electricity, Ups and Downs of Life, and Turn of the Tide, among other productions.

Beyond his stage career, Byron had a notable personal life connected to the theatrical world. He was married to Kate Byron, who was the sister of actress Ada Rehan. The couple's son, Arthur Byron, went on to become an actor in his own right.

Byron was also responsible for the construction of the Garfield Tea House in Long Branch, New Jersey, which he had built following the death of President James A. Garfield.
