About
Oliver Crawford (August 12, 1917 – September 24, 2008) was an American performer, screenwriter, and author born in Chicago, Illinois. He trained at the Chicago Art Institute and the Goodman Theatre school, where his classmates included Sam Wanamaker and Karl Malden, both of whom remained lifelong friends. Crawford went on to build a career that spanned Broadway, television writing, and fiction, navigating significant professional obstacles along the way.
Crawford appeared on Broadway in 1947 in The Gentleman From Athens. He subsequently moved into the television industry as a writer in the early 1950s, securing contracts with both Harold Hecht and Burt Lancaster by 1953. That same year, however, he was summoned before the House Un-American Activities Committee, which was investigating suspected Communist sympathizers in Hollywood. Crawford declined to implicate anyone in the entertainment industry, a decision that resulted in his blacklisting and the termination of his 1953 contract. He relocated to New York City with his family, taking on work such as designing window displays to support them during this period.
His return to television came in 1957, when actor Sam Levene secured him a writing position on Playhouse 90. Crawford's career gained considerable momentum through the 1960s, during which he contributed scripts to Gilligan's Island, The Fugitive, The Outer Limits, The Rifleman, The Big Valley, Rawhide, Ben Casey, Lawman, and I Spy. His writing work continued into the 1970s with credits on Love American Style, The Bionic Woman, Kojak, Mannix, and Ironside, among numerous other programs. Additional credits across his career included Star Trek, Bonanza, Quincy M.E., Perry Mason, and the Kraft Television Theatre.
Crawford received a Writers Guild award nomination for his work on The Outer Limits and earned multiple Emmy Award nominations, including for Lineup and Climax. He also lectured as an associate professor of filmmaking at Loyola Marymount University. In 1978, he published the novel The Execution, which followed survivors of a Nazi concentration camp who recognized a former doctor who had experimented on them and sought revenge. The book was adapted into a 1985 television film starring Sandy Dennis, Loretta Swit, Rip Torn, Valerie Harper, Jessica Walter, and Barbara Barrie.
Following the restoration of his career, Crawford served on the board of directors of the Writers Guild of America for 26 years. In that capacity he advocated for financial restitution for victims of the Hollywood blacklist and worked to remove an anti-Communist loyalty oath from the Writers Guild's membership application, a requirement that had persisted from the blacklist era. Crawford died on September 24, 2008, in Los Angeles from complications from pneumonia at the age of 91. He was survived by two daughters, Jo Kaufman and Vicki Crawford, one brother, and one sister. His wife, Bert, née Pikus, had died in 1986, and his son Kenneth Kaufman died in March 2015.
