About
Olive Templeton, born Olive MacMackin on October 19, 1883, was an American actress whose career spanned stage, film, and television across more than five decades. She died on May 29, 1979, in New York City.
Templeton began her performing career in 1899 with a touring production of Ibsen's Peer Gynt. She went on to work in numerous stage productions and appeared in several silent films, including Damaged Goods (1914), His Sad Awakening (1915), An Innocent Thief (1915), and Jack Kennard, Coward (1915). In 1919, she married John L. Flannery, and following her marriage she stepped away from the stage. After Flannery's death in 1937, she returned to acting in the 1940s.
Her Broadway career extended from 1915 to 1956 and included credits in Happy Hunting and The Rented Earl. Among her stage productions during her later career were The Swan (1945), in which she appeared alongside Ethel Merman, The Philadelphia Story (1946), Happy Hunting (1955), again with Merman, and a 1956 production of Chekhov's Uncle Vanya.
Templeton also established a presence in early television, appearing on programs including Playhouse 90, Goodyear Television Playhouse, Lux Video Theatre, and Armstrong Circle Theatre. She held a recurring role on Mister Peepers and was part of the original cast of Leave It to Larry before she and most of the other original cast members were replaced.
