About

Olga James (February 16, 1929 – January 25, 2025) was an American singer and actress born in Washington, D.C. Her father was a saxophonist and her mother was a dancer on the Chitlin Circuit. Following her parents' separation, James was raised by her grandparents before gaining admission to the Juilliard School in New York City, after which she relocated to Newark, New Jersey, to live with her mother. At Juilliard, she studied opera while developing a preference for Mozart art songs, German lieder, and French chansons, and formed a friendship with fellow student and singer Leontyne Price.

Professional connections made at Juilliard led to James's first paid role in 1952, when she was cast in a production of Virgil Thomson's opera Four Saints in Three Acts, which performed at a festival in Paris. Upon returning to New York, she secured a position as a singer in the all-black revue Larry Steele's Smart Affairs at Club Harlem in Atlantic City. While touring with that revue, she was recommended for an audition with director Otto Preminger for the 1954 all-black musical film Carmen Jones, itself based on Georges Bizet's opera Carmen. James was cast as Cindy Lou, the fiancée of Joe, a role played by Harry Belafonte. The film brought her significant recognition, and she was subsequently managed by Harlem Globetrotters owner Abe Saperstein, who referred to her as the sepia Leslie Caron. She made her television debut during a Harlem Globetrotters game in 1955 and continued performing in nightclubs following the film's success.

In 1956, James made her Broadway debut in the musical Mr. Wonderful, appearing opposite Sammy Davis Jr. in the role of Ethel Pearson. During the production, she befriended actress Frances Taylor, who was at the time dating jazz musician Miles Davis. Taylor introduced James to saxophonist Julian "Cannonball" Adderley at a nightclub where Davis was performing. James encountered Adderley again four years later in Los Angeles, and in March 1962 the two attended another of his performances together. They began a relationship and married on June 28, 1962, at New York City Hall, followed by a surprise church wedding in Florida arranged by Adderley's parents. The couple honeymooned at the Fontainebleau Hotel in Miami Beach and remained together until Adderley's death in 1975. James later married folk musician Len Chandler, who died in 2023.

Between 1969 and 1971, James held a recurring role on The Bill Cosby Show. In 1972, she contributed voice-over work to the animated series Sealab 2020. Her vocal recording credits include the 1954 Carmen Jones original soundtrack, the 1956 Broadway cast recording of Mr. Wonderful, and appearances on several albums connected to Cannonball Adderley, including The Happy People and the Nat Adderley Sextet Plus Rick Holmes release Soul of the Bible, both from 1972. She also appeared on David Axelrod's 1974 album Heavy Axe.

James died in Los Angeles on January 25, 2025, at the age of 95, from complications of a fall.
