About

Born August 27, 1911, in Eddington, Maine, Norman Kelley was the son of John Kelley and Janet Kelley. He studied at the New England Conservatory, Pasadena College, and Eastman, then served in the U.S. military from 1940 to 1945. His performing career included work with the City Opera troupe, the Metropolitan Opera, and the City Center Gilbert and Sullivan Company. In 1944, he married opera singer Maria Paradiso; the couple had two children before divorcing in 1969. Norman Kelley also translated Engelbert Humperdinck's Hänsel und Gretel into English, a version that opened in 1967 and continues to be performed by many opera companies.
