About

Norm Lewis, born June 2, 1963, in Tallahassee, Florida, is an American actor and baritone singer whose Broadway career spans from 1988 to 2022. He grew up in Eatonville, Florida, and graduated from Edgewater High School in Orlando in 1981. Before pursuing acting, he worked at the Orlando Sentinel. He credits Ralph Petillo, who ran Theatre on Park in Winter Park, Florida, with launching his career.

Lewis made his Broadway debut in The Who's Tommy in 1993, having previously appeared as Agwe in a 1992 Gateway Playhouse production of Once on This Island in Bellport, New York. His early Broadway work included a replacement role as John Thomas in Miss Saigon, originating the role of Jake in Side Show in 1997, and appearing in Michael John LaChiusa's The Wild Party as Eddie Mackrel. In 2002, he appeared in Michel Legrand's Amour alongside Melissa Errico, Malcolm Gets, and Lewis Cleale, and played the racketeer Eddie Satin in the New York City Center Encores! staged concert of Golden Boy. He took on the role of Billy Flynn in the Broadway revival of Chicago in early 2004. In 2005, he played Nathan in the Lincoln Center production of Dessa Rose and starred as Prospero in the Public Theater's Shakespeare in the Park revival of Two Gentlemen of Verona.

A defining chapter of Lewis's career began in 2006 when he originated the role of Inspector Javert in the Broadway revival of Les Misérables, becoming the first African American actor to play the role in a professional English-language production. He subsequently reprised Javert in the West End production, performed the role at London's O2 Arena for the show's 25th anniversary concert, and returned to it at The Muny in St. Louis from July 15 to 21, 2013, opposite Hugh Panaro as Jean Valjean. In 2007, Lewis originated the role of King Triton in the Broadway production of The Little Mermaid, a performance captured on the original Broadway cast recording. He reprised that role in 2016 for a live Hollywood Bowl concert production of the show.

Lewis's work with Stephen Sondheim's material has been a recurring thread throughout his career. He played the title role in Sweeney Todd at the Signature Theatre in 1999 and again at Casa Mañana Theatre in Fort Worth, Texas, beginning November 10, 2009. He reprised the role in an Off-Broadway production in 2017, for which he received an AUDELCO Award. In 2010, he was featured in the musical revue Sondheim on Sondheim, which premiered at the Roundabout Theatre's Studio 54 and was conceived and directed by James Lapine, also featuring Barbara Cook and Vanessa L. Williams. In November 2013, he appeared in the Stephen Sondheim and Wynton Marsalis staged concert A Bed and a Chair: A New York Love Affair at New York City Center, directed by John Doyle and featuring Bernadette Peters, Jeremy Jordan, and Cyrille Aimée.

Lewis received a Tony Award nomination for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical and a Drama Desk Award nomination for Outstanding Actor in a Musical, both in 2012, for his portrayal of Porgy in a revised production of Porgy and Bess. The American Repertory Theater production, re-imagined by Suzan-Lori Parks and Diedre Murray, began at the Loeb Drama Center in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in August through September 2011 before transferring to Broadway's Richard Rodgers Theatre, where previews began December 12, 2011.

On May 12, 2014, Lewis assumed the title role in The Phantom of the Opera on Broadway at the Majestic Theatre, becoming the first Black actor to play the Phantom on Broadway and the second African American actor overall to perform the role in Andrew Lloyd Webber's production, after Robert Guillaume. He joined returning cast member Sierra Boggess, who resumed the role of Christine Daaé on the same date, and succeeded Hugh Panaro. His tenure concluded on February 7, 2015. In 2023, Lewis reprised the Phantom in Love Never Dies, the sequel to The Phantom of the Opera, in London's West End.

Beyond the stage, Lewis joined the cast of the ABC political thriller Scandal in 2012, playing Senator Edison Davis. He portrayed Caiaphas in the live televised concert production of Jesus Christ Superstar on April 1, 2018, a performance documented on the production's original soundtrack recording. In February 2019, he played Harold Hill in the Kennedy Center production of The Music Man. He also appeared in Once on This Island at the Circle in the Square Theatre beginning January 8, 2018, reprising the role of Agwe through March of that year, and was part of the 2022 to 2023 North American tour of A Soldier's Play as Captain Richard Davenport. His Broadway credits additionally include Sondheim on Sondheim and Chicken & Biscuits. Lewis released his debut solo album, This Is the Life!, in 2008 under the Seahorse Productions label, and is a recipient of the 2014 AUDELCO Special Achievement Award.
