About

Nora Cecil (September 26, 1878 – May 1, 1951) was an English-born American actress whose career extended across three decades and encompassed both stage and screen work during the silent and sound film eras.

Cecil launched her performing career on the London stage, making her debut there at age 19. She subsequently crossed to the United States, where she appeared on Broadway in the musical The Sleeping Beauty and the Beast at the Broadway Theatre. The production ran for more than 240 performances during the 1901–1902 season.

In 1915, Cecil transitioned from the stage to film, beginning with a starring role in The Arrival of Perpetua, directed by Émile Chautard. Over the course of her screen career she accumulated well over 100 feature films and shorts, frequently cast as welfare workers, landladies, schoolmistresses, and maiden aunts. Among her more prominent film appearances was a role in The Old Fashioned Way (1934), a vehicle starring W.C. Fields. She also appeared in Ernst Lubitsch's historical romance The Merry Widow, which starred Maurice Chevalier and Jeanette MacDonald, and in the 1939 adaptation of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn alongside Mickey Rooney. John Ford's Stagecoach, featuring John Wayne, was another notable credit. Cecil's final screen performance came in 1947, when she played Louisa Ames in Mourning Becomes Electra, a film starring Rosalind Russell.

Cecil was married to real estate broker Russell Evans, who died in 1949. The couple had two children: a daughter, Dorothy Cecil, who pursued a brief stage career as an actress, and a son, Kenneth Russell Evans, who became a petroleum engineer. Cecil died on May 1, 1951, and was cremated.
