About
Nolan Gerard Funk is a Canadian actor and singer born on July 28, 1986, in Vancouver, British Columbia. He also holds German citizenship. Before pursuing a career in entertainment, Funk competed nationally in gymnastics until the age of 13 and was a competitive national diver.
Funk's screen career began in 2001 with a guest role in the television series Seven Days, playing a character named Ryan. The following year he appeared in the short film Moon in the Afternoon as Alexander and in the Steven Spielberg-produced series Taken as Young Eric Crawford. In 2003, he had a role in the Marvel live-action film X2 as a captured X-Kid. Between 2004 and 2006, he had a recurring role as Ben Lalonde in Renegadepress.com, work for which he received a 2007 Leo Award nomination in the category of Best Performance or Host in a Youth or Children's Program or Series. Additional television appearances during this period included the Smallville episode "Krypto" in 2005 and the biographical film A Girl Like Me: The Gwen Araujo Story in 2006, directed by Oscar nominee Agnieszka Holland, in which he played Michael Imagidson. That same year he appeared in Hollow Man 2 as Josh.
In 2007, Funk starred opposite Jennifer Beals in My Name Is Sarah and took on a recurring role as Todd Palladino in the CW series Aliens in America. In 2008, he appeared in the film Deadgirl as Dwyer, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival. He also appeared in Miranda Cosgrove's music video for "Stay My Baby." A significant early career milestone came with his casting in the Columbia Records and Nickelodeon film Spectacular!, opposite Tammin Sursok. Funk made his Broadway debut in 2009, playing the title role of Conrad Birdie in the revival of Bye Bye Birdie. The production ran at Henry Miller's Theatre, with previews beginning September 10, 2009, and closing January 24, 2010. Despite the show receiving largely negative critical notices, Funk was singled out for praise, earning the designation "Excellent" from John Lahr of The New Yorker and positive recognition from New York Times critic Ben Brantley.
In 2010, Funk appeared in Jack's Family Adventure as Derek Vickery and in Bereavement as William, and took on recurring roles in Warehouse 13, Triple Dog, and Detroit 1-8-7. In 2012, he appeared alongside Jennifer Lawrence and Elisabeth Shue in House at the End of the Street. The following year he starred in the erotic thriller The Canyons, written by Bret Easton Ellis and directed by Paul Schrader, alongside Lindsay Lohan and James Deen. Also in 2013, he appeared in Riddick, the third installment of the Chronicles of Riddick film series, playing a devoutly religious mercenary named Luna; the film opened at number one on September 6, 2013. In December of that year, Funk was named the face of Versace's spring/summer 2014 menswear campaign, photographed by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott.
On television, Funk guest-starred in season four of Glee as Hunter Clarington, the new frontman of the Dalton Academy Warblers, and had a season-long role in season three of the MTV series Awkward as Collin Jennings. He subsequently served as a series regular on the first season of the Starz series Counterpart, starring alongside J.K. Simmons. In the show, Funk played Angel Eyes, a cult-raised German assassin, and performed dialogue in German. In 2019, he was cast as a series regular on the HBO Max series The Flight Attendant, opposite Kaley Cuoco, a role for which he received a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination for Best Comedic Ensemble in 2021. In 2022, he appeared as a series regular in Netflix's Partner Track, directed by Julie Anne Robinson, and was recognized by Variety as one of the show's standout elements.
