About
As a teenager in 1931, Noel Taylor appeared onstage with the Lunts, but by the early 1940s he had shifted to costume design. Eva Le Gallienne tapped him to design costumes for her blockbuster 1947 production of Alice in Wonderland, launching a career that would span more than 100 stage shows. His film and television work proved even more prolific — Katharine Hepburn, Gloria Swanson, Kirk Douglas, Bette Davis, Rosalind Russell, and Elizabeth Taylor all wore his designs. Television brought him his greatest success, particularly the 1953 Hamlet for "Hallmark Hall of Fame," whose costumes helped bring theatrical standards to the small screen. He continued designing for the Hallmark series for 17 years. Nominated for four Emmys, Noel Taylor won one for PBS's "Actor: The Paul Muni Story" in 1978. In 2004, the Costume Designers Guild honored him with a lifetime achievement award for his contributions to television.
