About
Noah Nicholas Emmerich, born February 27, 1965, in New York City, is an American actor whose career has spanned stage, film, and television. He is the youngest of three sons born to Constance Emmerich, a concert pianist, and André Emmerich (1924–2007), a gallery owner and art dealer who was born in Frankfurt, Germany, and emigrated from Nazi Germany with his family, traveling first to Amsterdam before settling in New York in 1940. André's aunt was a classmate of Anne Frank. The family's heritage is Jewish, with roots in Germany and France on the paternal side and Hungary and Romania on the maternal side. Emmerich's brothers are Toby Emmerich, who served as chairman of Warner Bros. Pictures Group from 2018 to 2022, and Adam Emmerich, a partner and co-chair of the corporate department at the law firm Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz.
Emmerich received his early education at the Dalton School, where he also learned to play the trumpet. He studied acting privately under Ron Stetson, an actor and director who holds a senior position on the acting staff at the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York City, focusing on the Meisner technique. He went on to graduate from Yale University in 1987 with a bachelor's degree in history. During his time at Yale, he was a member of the a cappella singing group the Yale Spizzwinks(?), which also counted actor Joshua Malina among its members. In 1992, Emmerich made his Broadway debut in A Few Good Men.
His film career gained momentum with a starring role in Beautiful Girls (1996), which drew positive notices from critics and audiences. He subsequently appeared in supporting capacities in The Truman Show (1998), Life, and Frequency (2000). In the following decade, he took on roles in more dramatic features, including Julie Johnson, Beyond Borders, Little Children (2006), and Pride and Glory. He portrayed assistant coach Craig Patrick in the 2004 film Miracle and played the main antagonist Colonel Nelec in J. J. Abrams's Super 8 (2011), a critically praised box office success. In 2016, he appeared as Bill Hammond in the Western Jane Got a Gun.
On television, Emmerich began with guest appearances on series including NYPD Blue and Melrose Place before taking on more prominent roles in Monk, White Collar, and The Walking Dead, the last of which earned him a Saturn Award nomination. He reprised his Walking Dead role in 2021 in the series finale of The Walking Dead: World Beyond. His most prominent television work came with the FX drama The Americans, in which he starred as FBI agent Stan Beeman from 2013 to 2018 across six seasons. He also made his directorial debut on the series, helming season three's seventh episode, "Walter Taffet," and directing the fifth episode of season four. He won the Critics' Choice Television Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series in 2019 for his performance on the show. In September 2019, he starred in the Netflix limited series The Spy as Israeli Mossad recruiting agent Dan Peleg, and he was subsequently cast as Kick Grabaston in the Netflix comedy series Space Force, announced on October 23, 2019.
Emmerich was married to actress Melissa Fitzgerald from 1998 to 2003. On April 26, 2014, he married actress and producer Mary Regency Boies, daughter of lawyers David and Mary Boies, at the Gramercy Park Hotel in New York City. He resides in Greenwich Village, New York City.
