About
Nina Romano, born Isabel Craven Dilworth on October 18, 1901, in Salem, New Jersey, was an American actress who worked in both stage and film. She was the daughter of John Dale Dilworth, a glass manufacturer, and his wife Letitia Hamill Craven Dilworth. Romano developed an interest in acting during her high school years at Ward-Belmont College in Nashville, Tennessee, and subsequently trained at a dramatic school in New York.
Her professional stage career began with a production of Don Juan, after which she concentrated primarily on dramatic work. In 1924, she expanded her range by taking on a comedic part in the farce The Whole Town's Talking. Her Broadway career spanned from 1927 to 1932 and included two productions: the musical The Love Call in 1927 and the play The Warrior's Husband in 1932.
Alongside her stage work, Romano pursued a career in film. Her screen debut came in Titans, produced by Universal Pictures, which led to her signing a long-term contract with the studio in 1925. Her film credits included The Storm Breaker (1925), The Palace of Pleasure (1926), What Happened to Jones (1926), The Midnight Sun (1926), Money to Burn (1926), Lost at the Front (1927), and Her Husband's Women (1929).
Romano married actor Lou Tellegen on December 17, 1923, in Rutherford, New Jersey. The two had performed together in Blind Youth, and they kept their marriage private until February 1925, when their son was born. On August 30, 1928, Romano and Tellegen filed for bankruptcy together, and the couple divorced in Los Angeles in November of that year. On October 24, 1931, Romano married Count S. Danneskiold-Samsøe of Denmark. That marriage also ended in divorce, and in 1955 Romano sued the count to recover $171,000 she stated she had advanced to him.
Romano died on October 15, 1966, at Cravenskiold Farm in Granada Hills, California, three days before her 65th birthday. She was buried near Saugus, California.
