About

Nicholas Jerry Jonas was born on September 16, 1992, in Dallas, Texas, the third son of Denise (née Miller) and Paul Kevin Jonas. His father is a songwriter, musician, and former ordained minister at an Assemblies of God church; his mother is a former sign language teacher and singer. Jonas has two older brothers, Kevin and Joe, and a younger brother, Frankie. He was raised in Wyckoff, New Jersey and homeschooled by his mother.

Jonas was discovered at age six in a barber shop, where a professional show business manager took notice of him. He began performing on Broadway at age seven, taking on roles that included Tiny Tim, Chip Potts, Little Jake, and Gavroche. His Broadway career, which spanned productions from 1987 to 2025, included appearances in Annie Get Your Gun, The Sleeping Beauty and the Beast, and Les Misérables, as well as starring roles in The Last Five Years and Jonas Brothers on Broadway. While performing in Beauty and the Beast in 2002, Jonas co-wrote the song "Joy to the World (A Christmas Prayer)" with his father; the track featured background vocals from fellow cast members and appeared on the compilation Broadway's Greatest Gifts: Carols for a Cure, Vol. 4. INO Records subsequently released the song to Christian radio in 2003, marking Jonas's debut single.

The single drew the attention of Columbia Records, which signed Jonas alongside INO Records. His debut studio album, Nicholas Jonas, received a limited release on September 5, 2004, though a planned wide release was ultimately cancelled. Columbia's new president, Steve Greenberg, appreciated Jonas's voice but not the album itself; after hearing the song "Please Be Mine," he chose to sign Jonas and his brothers as a group. The brothers initially considered the name Sons of Jonas before settling on Jonas Brothers. In 2005, Jonas was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of thirteen.

The Jonas Brothers released their debut single, "Mandy," in December 2005, and their debut studio album, It's About Time, on August 8, 2006, through Columbia Records. The album received limited label support and an initial pressing of only 50,000 copies, though it eventually sold 1,750,000 copies in total. The group was dropped by Columbia in 2007 and subsequently signed with Hollywood Records. Their self-titled second studio album, released on August 7, 2007, entered the top five of the Billboard 200 and sold over two million copies in the United States. The single "S.O.S." became their first top-twenty hit on the Billboard Hot 100, selling over 1.5 million copies domestically.

The brothers made their acting debut on the Disney Channel series Hannah Montana in August 2007, performing "We Got the Party" alongside Miley Cyrus in an episode that drew over ten million viewers. In May 2008, they began starring in their own Disney series, Jonas Brothers: Living the Dream. That same year, Jonas made his film debut in the Disney Channel movie Camp Rock, starring alongside Demi Lovato; the film drew 8.86 million viewers. The group's third studio album, A Little Bit Longer, debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 in 2008, sold over 525,000 copies in its first week, and went on to move more than two million copies in the United States, remaining the band's highest-selling album. Its lead single, "Burnin' Up," became the group's first top-five hit on the Billboard Hot 100. A sequel film, Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam, followed in 2010, as did a second Disney series, Jonas, which ran from 2009 to 2010.

The Jonas Brothers' 3D concert film, Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience, was released theatrically on February 27, 2009, and became the sixth highest-grossing concert film. Their fourth studio album, Lines, Vines and Trying Times, was released in 2009, after which the group confirmed a hiatus. Jonas then formed Nick Jonas & the Administration, releasing the album Who I Am in 2010. He subsequently shifted focus toward acting, taking on a recurring role in the television series Smash in addition to returning to Broadway.

Following the Jonas Brothers' official disbandment in 2013, Jonas signed with Island Records and released his second solo studio album, Nick Jonas, in 2014. The single "Jealous" achieved significant commercial success. Jonas later co-founded Safehouse Records in conjunction with Island and Hollywood Records. His third solo album, Last Year Was Complicated, peaked at number two on the Billboard 200 in 2016. That same year, Jonas received the Songwriters Hall of Fame's Hal David Starlight Award. In 2017, he appeared in the adventure comedy film Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, which ranked as the fifth highest-grossing film of the year. The Jonas Brothers reformed in early 2019 and released the album Happiness Begins in June of that year. Jonas's fourth solo studio album, Spaceman, was released on March 12, 2021.
