About
Nicholas James Fradiani IV was born on November 15, 1985, in New Haven, Connecticut, and grew up in Guilford, Connecticut. His father, Nick Fradiani III, is a musician who performs at venues including Water's Edge Resort and Spa, as well as clubs, restaurants, and cruise ships. Fradiani is of three-quarters Italian and one-quarter Irish descent. His father introduced him to music early, giving him a drum set at age two and later encouraging him to learn piano and guitar. Fradiani graduated from Guilford High School in 2004 and went on to earn a bachelor's degree in history from Wheaton College in Norton, Massachusetts. Before his music career gained traction, he worked intermittently as a substitute teacher and briefly held a position as a computer software salesman.
Fradiani first gained regional recognition as the lead vocalist and guitarist of Beach Avenue, a five-member pop/rock band based in Milford, Connecticut. The group, which also included Nick Abraham on lead guitar and mandolin, Nick Fradiani III on keyboards, Jonah Ferrigno on bass, and Ryan Zipp on drums, won the Battle of the Bands at Mohegan Sun in 2011. Beach Avenue released the Something to Believe In EP in June 2012 and the Driving That Road EP in July 2013, followed by two singles, "Coming Your Way" and "Feel the Beat," in 2014. That same year, Fradiani, Abraham, and Zipp competed as part of the band on the ninth season of America's Got Talent, performing their original song "Coming Your Way" in an audition that aired on NBC in July 2014. All four judges advanced them to the next round, and the song reached No. 53 on the iTunes Pop Singles Chart, selling more than 10,000 copies. The band was eliminated during Judgment Week after performing "Feel the Beat."
In 2015, Fradiani entered the fourteenth season of American Idol as a solo competitor, auditioning in New York City with Peter Gabriel's "In Your Eyes." He performed David Gray's "Babylon" during Hollywood Week and Train's "Drops of Jupiter" at the House of Blues Showcase to secure a spot in the Top 24. He was announced the season's winner on May 13, 2015, with Clark Beckham as runner-up, making Fradiani the first winner from the Northeast region. His winning single, "Beautiful Life," recorded on the Big Machine label, served as the official anthem of the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup. Following his win, Fradiani headlined the American Idols LIVE! Tour 2015, a thirty-seven-city tour over eight weeks featuring the season's top five contestants.
Work on Fradiani's debut album included collaborations with writers such as Paul Doucette and Jason Mraz. The track "Hurricane," which gave the album its title, was co-written with Mraz and Beach Avenue guitarist Nick Abraham, with Fradiani and Abraham debuting the song acoustically at the B93 Big Summer Show in Modesto, California, on June 10, 2016. The album Hurricane was released on August 5, 2016, through Big Machine Label Group and debuted at number one on Billboard's Heatseekers chart. A single from the album, "Get You Home," was co-written by Fradiani with Nolan Sipe, Jaden Michaels, and Rykeyz, and mixed by Grammy winner Serban Ghenea. A second single, "All On You," was also released on August 5, 2016, with a performance video shot at New Haven's Lyric Hall by Ryan Zipp. In January 2017, Fradiani parted ways with Big Machine Label Group and 19 Entertainment.
Following his departure from the label, Fradiani released the six-song EP Where We Left Off on October 13, 2017, as an independent artist. The EP was written entirely with Beach Avenue guitarist Nick Abraham and represented a return to a more organic sound. He also toured with The Alternate Routes during this period.
Fradiani subsequently transitioned to the Broadway stage, appearing in A Beautiful Noise, The Neil Diamond Musical from 2022 to 2024.
