About

Nick Dennis, born Nicolas Caravidas on April 26, 1904, in Thessaly, Greece, was a Greek American actor who worked in theater, film, and television under the professional name Nick Dennis. He died on November 14, 1980, at Sepulveda Veterans Administration Hospital in Los Angeles.

Dennis arrived in the United States in 1914 and received his early education in public schools in Lowell, Massachusetts. Following his father's death, he relocated to Independence, Missouri, to live with his sister, where he attended William Chrisman High School under the name Nick Canavaras. While working as a waiter in his brother-in-law's restaurant during that period, he reportedly served Harry S. Truman on numerous occasions, at a time when Truman was serving as a county judge. Dennis subsequently spent two years at the University of Illinois.

His Broadway career spanned from 1935 to 1947 and included productions across multiple genres. Among his stage credits were the comedy The Innocent Voyage, the drama Storm Operation, The Rugged Path, and Cyrano de Bergerac. He also appeared in Tennessee Williams' A Streetcar Named Desire, in which he played Pablo Gonzales, a role he reprised in the 1951 film adaptation.

Dennis entered film in 1947 and became recognized for portraying ethnic characters, most frequently Greek roles. His film appearances included Kiss Me Deadly and Sirocco, the latter starring Humphrey Bogart. A fluent Greek speaker, he also maintained an active television presence across the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s, playing orderly Nick Kanavaras on the medical drama Ben Casey and Uncle Constantine on the detective series Kojak.

In 1946, Dennis married Helen Stratas in Toronto, Ontario. The couple raised two daughters before divorcing in 1967. They remarried in 1970 and divorced again in 1972. His 1980 obituaries identified Helen Dennis as his wife of 34 years at the time of his death. During the final six years of his life, Dennis battled both myasthenia gravis and cancer. He was survived by his daughters and by Helen Dennis.
