About
Nelson Leigh, born Sydney Talbot Christie on January 1, 1905, in Mississippi, was an American actor whose career spanned stage, film, and television. The son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Christie, he graduated from the University of Southern California in 1929. He died on July 3, 1985.
Leigh appeared on Broadway in 1945 in a production of Hamlet. His stage work also included portraying Jesus Christ in the annual Pilgrimage Play, performed at the Hollywood Pilgrimage Bowl, a role he held for many years. That sustained association with religious material shaped the trajectory of his screen career, drawing him repeatedly into sacred, medieval, and authority-figure roles.
Over the course of the 1940s and 1950s, Leigh accumulated more than 130 motion picture appearances, the majority in supporting capacities. His casting in religious and medieval parts led to his playing King Arthur in the 1949 adventure serial The Adventures of Sir Galahad. That same year he appeared in a syndicated television adaptation of Charles Dickens's A Christmas Carol, a low-budget half-hour production narrated by Vincent Price and starring Taylor Holmes as Ebenezer Scrooge, with Jill St. John among the cast; Leigh played the Ghost of Christmas Past. He portrayed Jesus Christ in the Christian film The Living Bible and took on the role of the Apostle Paul in both the Life of St. Paul series and the Acts of the Apostles series. His calm demeanor also secured him roles as priests, military officers, and other figures of authority, including a priest in Angels' Alley (1947) alongside The Bowery Boys and another in the western Jesse James vs. the Daltons (1954). He appeared as Dr. Gailbraithe in the science-fiction film World Without End.
Leigh maintained a consistent presence in television throughout his career. He appeared in a 1950 episode of The Lone Ranger, in the 1955 anthology series Police Call, and in recurring and guest capacities on Perry Mason, Bonanza, and The F.B.I. He also held a recurring role as Pastor Martin in the Christian anthology series This Is the Life.
His work in religious media earned him formal recognition on two occasions. In 1949, the American Association of Religious Film Directors presented him with its Best Actor Award for his portrayal of the Christus in The Calling of Matthew. In 1953, the National Evangelistic Film Foundation awarded him a Christian Oscar for his contributions to The Living Bible and This Is the Life.
