About
Nell O'Day (September 22, 1909 – January 5, 1989) was an American actress and equestrian whose career spanned stage, film, and vaudeville across the 1930s and 1940s. Born in Prairie Hill, Texas, she was the daughter of a railroad official. Her earliest professional work was as a vaudeville dancer, and she had her first screen appearances in the 1920s while still a teenager.
O'Day made her Broadway debut in 1930, playing Maribelle Fordyce in the musical Fine and Dandy. Her subsequent stage credits included Many Mansions in 1937, One for the Money in 1939, and Many Happy Returns in 1945. Her Broadway career thus extended across fifteen years, with appearances in both comedic and musical productions.
Her film career gained momentum in 1932 when she took her first starring role in Rackety Rax, appearing opposite Victor McLaglen and Greta Nissan. Between 1933 and 1940 she appeared in nineteen films, the majority of which were not westerns. Beginning in 1941, however, she shifted toward western heroines, frequently appearing alongside Johnny Mack Brown, Ray "Crash" Corrigan, Max Terhune, and John "Dusty" King. In 1942 she starred in the cliffhanger serial Perils of the Royal Mounted, and in 1943, under contract with Republic Pictures, she joined the Three Mesquiteers film series alongside Bob Steele, Tom Tyler, and Jimmie Dodd. That same year she appeared in Boss of Rawhide opposite Dave O'Brien, which marked her final starring western role. Her last film appearance came in 1946 with the non-western The Story of Kenneth W. Randall M.D.
Following her acting career, O'Day devoted her time to writing screenplays and stage plays. She died of a heart attack on January 5, 1989, in Los Angeles, California.
