About
Cornelius James Fitzgerald, known professionally as Neil Fitzgerald, was born on 15 January 1893 on Henry Street, now called O'Brien Street, in Tipperary, Ireland. He was the son of James Joseph Fitzgerald, a grocer, and Ellen McGrath. Fitzgerald received his education at Trinity College Dublin, where he studied pharmacy before deciding to pursue a career as an actor instead. He died on 15 June 1982 in Princeton, New Jersey.
Fitzgerald's Broadway career spanned more than three decades, from 1940 to 1971. His debut on the Broadway stage came in 1940 with Leave Her to Heaven, and over the following years he appeared in numerous Irish plays as part of his work in the New York theater world. His Broadway credits include Roar Like a Dove, Hadrian VII, The Mundy Scheme, All Over, and Murderous Angels, among other productions.
Beyond the stage, Fitzgerald also built a career in film and television. His credited film debut came in 1935, when he appeared as Tommy Connor in John Ford's The Informer. He accumulated additional credits in television throughout his career.
