About
Nathan Lane, born Joseph Lane on February 3, 1956, in Jersey City, New Jersey, is an American actor whose career has encompassed Broadway, film, and television across more than four decades. The son of Daniel Joseph Lane, a truck driver and aspiring tenor who died of alcoholism in 1967, and Nora Veronica Lane, a housewife and secretary who suffered from bipolar disorder and died in 2000, Lane grew up in a Catholic household with two older brothers, Daniel Jr. and Robert. All four of his grandparents were Irish immigrants. He attended St. Peter's Preparatory School in Jersey City, a Jesuit institution where he was voted Best Actor in 1974 and later received the Prep Hall of Fame Professional Achievement Award in 2011. He was named Joseph after an uncle who was a Jesuit priest, and later adopted the stage name Nathan after Nathan Detroit, the character from Guys and Dolls, because another Joseph Lane was already registered with Actors' Equity.
After briefly attending Saint Joseph's University in Philadelphia on a drama scholarship before leaving due to financial constraints, Lane moved to New York City in 1975. He made his professional theatre debut in 1978 in an off-Broadway production of A Midsummer Night's Dream at the Equity Library Theatre, appearing alongside John Goodman. He also worked briefly as part of the stand-up comedy team of Stack and Lane before transitioning fully to stage acting. His Broadway debut came in 1982 in a revival of Noël Coward's Present Laughter, directed by and starring George C. Scott, in which Lane played Roland Maule alongside Kate Burton, Dana Ivey, and Christine Lahti, earning a Drama Desk nomination. His second Broadway appearance followed in 1983 in the musical Merlin, starring Chita Rivera and magician Doug Henning, after which he appeared in Wind in the Willows as Mr. Toad.
Lane's association with playwright Terrence McNally, whom he met in 1987, became one of the defining professional relationships of his stage career. Their collaboration included The Lisbon Traviata, which earned Lane Drama Desk and Lucille Lortel Awards, as well as Lips Together, Teeth Apart, Love! Valour! Compassion!, which brought him Obie, Drama Desk, and Outer Critics Circle Awards, and Dedication or the Stuff of Dreams, among other projects. His connection to composer Stephen Sondheim also began in 1989 with a workshop reading of Assassins, in which he played Samuel Byck. In 1992, Lane starred in a Broadway revival of Guys and Dolls as Nathan Detroit, the very character whose name he had borrowed, opposite Peter Gallagher and Faith Prince, receiving his first Tony nomination along with Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards. That same year he won an Obie Award for Sustained Excellence of Performance. In 1993, he portrayed a Sid Caesar-inspired comedian in Neil Simon's Laughter on the 23rd Floor on Broadway.
A six-time Tony Award nominee, Lane has won three times. His first Tony came in 1996 for Best Actor in a Musical for his performance as Pseudolus in the Broadway revival of Stephen Sondheim's A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, a role that also brought him Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards. His second Tony for Best Actor in a Musical came in 2001 for playing Max Bialystock in Mel Brooks' The Producers. His third Tony, for Best Featured Actor in a Play, was awarded in 2018 for his portrayal of Roy Cohn in Tony Kushner's Angels in America. He received additional Tony nominations for Guys and Dolls in 1992, The Nance in 2013, and The Front Page in 2016. Among his many other Broadway credits are The Man Who Came to Dinner, The Odd Couple, Butley, Waiting for Godot, The Addams Family, It's Only a Play, Gary: A Sequel to Titus Andronicus, Pictures from Home, and Death of a Salesman in 2026.
Beyond the stage, Lane has accumulated a substantial body of film and television work. He voiced Timon the meerkat in Disney's The Lion King in 1994 and reprised the role in its sequel and midquel, as well as in early episodes of the animated series Timon and Pumbaa. His 1996 film The Birdcage, directed by Mike Nichols with a screenplay by Elaine May and co-starring Robin Williams and Gene Hackman, earned him his first Golden Globe nomination. He went on to appear in Mouse Hunt, the film adaptation of The Producers, and Beau Is Afraid in 2023. On television, he portrayed F. Lee Bailey in the FX miniseries The People v. O. J. Simpson: American Crime Story in 2016 and Dominick Dunne in the Netflix series Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story in 2024. He received a Primetime Emmy Award in 2022 for his role in the Hulu mystery comedy series Only Murders in the Building and earned additional Emmy nominations for guest appearances in Frasier, Mad About You, Modern Family, and The Good Wife. He has also appeared in Penny Dreadful: City of Angels, The Gilded Age, and Mid-Century Modern.
Lane's accolades extend well beyond his three Tony Awards. He has received seven Drama Desk Awards, a Laurence Olivier Award, three Emmy Awards, and a Screen Actors Guild Award. He was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2006 and inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame in 2008. His Broadway career spans from 1982 to 2026, encompassing more than 25 productions across comedy, drama, and musical theatre.
