About
Nathan George (July 27, 1936 – March 3, 2017) was an American actor and stage director whose career spanned from 1968 to 1997. Born in the United States, he built a reputation across Broadway, Off-Broadway, regional theater, and film over the course of nearly three decades.
George's Broadway work concentrated in the late 1960s, with appearances in No Place to Be Somebody and The Great White Hope. His performance in Charles Gordone's No Place to Be Somebody earned him particular distinction: he shared a 1969 Obie Award with Ron O'Neal for that production, and the same performance brought him a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Performance in 1969. Gordone's play would go on to win the Pulitzer Prize.
Beyond performing, George pursued directing for the stage. In 1970 he directed Ron Milner's Who's Got His Own at Center Stage in Baltimore. Three years later, in 1973, he directed Cummings and Bowings, a play drawn from the poetry of E.E. Cummings, for the U.R.G.E.N.T. Theatre in New York City.
His film work included roles in Klute (1971), Serpico (1973), The Taking of Pelham One Two Three (1974), One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975), Short Eyes (1977), in which he was one of the leads, and Brubaker (1980). His final film appearance came in Harsh Light in 1997.
George died on March 3, 2017, in New York City.
