About
Natalie Jackson Mendoza, born on August 12, 1978, in Hong Kong, is an Australian actress and performer. Her mother, Robin Jackson, is an Australian television personality of German descent, and her father, Noel Mendoza, is a jazz pianist and arranger of Filipino descent. One of six artist siblings, Mendoza was raised across Sydney, Melbourne, and Hong Kong, and later pursued training in London and New York.
Mendoza began her performing career in musical theatre, taking on roles in productions including Cats, Miss Saigon, Sweet Charity, and the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. She played Eponine in the 10th Anniversary Australasian Tour of Les Misérables and served as an understudy to Sarah Brightman on The Music of Lloyd Webber Concert Tour. In 1998, she and her sister Rebecca formed the musical duo Jackson Mendoza, signing internationally with Virgin Records. The group achieved a number-one chart position in Australia and released two singles that reached the Australian Top 10 before disbanding in 2000.
Her screen career gained momentum when she appeared in the Golden Globe Award-winning film Moulin Rouge! as lead dancer China Doll. Following that project, she signed a three-picture deal with Miramax and recorded a solo album in Melbourne. Her television work during this period included appearances in Farscape and the role of Liat in ABC's South Pacific, opposite Harry Connick Jr. and Glenn Close.
In 2003, Mendoza relocated to England to concentrate on acting, enrolling at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School to train in classical theatre. Her stage work there encompassed productions of Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet, The Importance of Being Earnest, and Five Kinds of Silence, among others. In 2005, director Neil Marshall cast her in the lead role of Juno Kaplan in the horror film The Descent, a role she reprised in The Descent Part 2 in 2009. That same year she joined the BBC1 drama series Hotel Babylon, playing the series regular character Jackie Clunes across three seasons from 2006 to 2008.
In 2007, Mendoza guest-starred in the Doctor Who audio dramas Absolution and The Girl Who Never Was, and also wrote the title track, "Alone Again," for the horror film Surviving Evil. She additionally workshopped the lead role of Molly in Matthew Warchus's production of Ghost, based on the original screenplay by Bruce Rubin.
Mendoza's Broadway career began in 2010 when she originated the role of Arachne in Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark. She performed the role during preview performances before a backstage injury forced her departure from the production. In 2011, she won awards for best director, best writer, and best film at the 72-hour film festival in Los Angeles. Between 2017 and 2020, she guest starred in television productions including Blue Bloods, Holby City, and McDonald & Dodds. She also appeared in the Leos Carax-directed musical film Annette, starring Adam Driver and Marion Cotillard.
Mendoza returned to Broadway in 2021, joining the cast of Moulin Rouge! The Musical in the lead role of Satine. Her Broadway credits span 2011 to 2019 and include both Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark and Moulin Rouge! The Musical. Earlier stage work also included the role of Gigi in Miss Saigon and the role of Imelda Marcos in Here Lies Love.
