About
Nancy Carroll, born Ann Veronica Lahiff on November 19, 1903, in New York City, was an American actress whose career spanned Broadway, film, and television. The seventh of twelve children born to Thomas and Ann Lahiff, she was of Irish parentage and received her education at Holy Trinity School in New York before leaving at age 16 to work as a stenographer for a lace manufacturer. Though christened Ann, she eventually insisted on being called Nancy, and her family agreed the name suited her. She performed on Broadway between 1923 and 1948, and later earned a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on February 8, 1960, at 1725 Vine Street.
Carroll's stage career began in 1923 when she and her sister auditioned for the Shuberts after working up a specialty number together, which led to performing engagements. That same year she appeared in the chorus of The Passing Show of 1912 in New York. Her Broadway credits also included the musicals Mayflowers and Big Boy, as well as the plays For Heaven's Sake, Mother! and An Undesirable Lady. Although Carroll had initially aspired to character acting, she found that managers consistently directed her toward musical comedy, telling her she was not suited to dramatic productions. Her early experience also included work in second-rate road companies and a portrayal of Roxie Hart in the Los Angeles production of Chicago.
Her transition to film began with Ladies Must Dress in 1927, and in 1928 she appeared in eight films. Easy Come, Easy Go, co-starring Richard Dix, established her as a movie star. Her musical theater background proved an asset in the sound era, allowing her to take on film musicals of the 1930s with ease. In 1929 she starred in The Dance of Life alongside Hal Skelly and in The Wolf of Wall Street with George Bancroft and Olga Baclanova. Her performance in The Devil's Holiday earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress in 1930. Additional notable films included Laughter (1930), Paramount on Parade (1930), Broken Lullaby (1932) directed by Ernst Lubitsch, Hot Saturday (1932) with Cary Grant and Randolph Scott, and The Kiss Before the Mirror (1933) directed by James Whale.
Under contract to Paramount Pictures, Carroll developed a reputation for resisting the roles the studio assigned her. Despite critical and public praise — she received more fan mail than any other star in the early 1930s — and a demonstrated range across light comedy, melodrama, and musicals, Paramount released her from her contract. She subsequently signed a four-film deal with Columbia Pictures before retiring from film entirely in 1938 and returning to the stage.
Carroll's television career ran from 1950 to 1963. In 1950 she starred as the mother in the early television series The Aldrich Family, and the following year she guest-starred in the television version of The Egg and I, which starred her daughter, Patricia Kirkland.
Carroll was married three times. Her first husband was author Jack Kirkland; they were married for seven years before divorcing in 1931. That same year she married educator Francis Bolton Mallory, and after three years together and three years of separation, they divorced. Her third husband was C. H. J. Groen, a manufacturer of fiberglass. On August 6, 1965, Carroll was found dead after failing to appear at the theater for a scheduled performance. The cause of death was an aneurysm. She was 61 years old.
