About
Nancy Barrett is an American former actress born on October 5, 1941, in Shreveport, Louisiana, though she spent most of her early years in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. She began her higher education at Baylor University in Waco, Texas, completing her final year at UCLA, from which she graduated.
Following her graduation from UCLA, Barrett married her agent, Ralph Pine, and the couple relocated to New York City. In June 1966, she secured the role of Carolyn Stoddard on the gothic soap opera Dark Shadows, a part for which she remains best known. Over the course of the series, she appeared in 403 episodes and portrayed multiple characters. The show was canceled in April 1971. During her time on Dark Shadows, Barrett also appeared in two theatrical films derived from the series: House of Dark Shadows in 1970 and Night of Dark Shadows in 1971.
Barrett's stage work includes a Broadway appearance in 1965 in Mr. Pickwick. In 1967, she performed at the Wayside Theatre alongside Dark Shadows cast members David Ford and Jerry Lacy. Ford, whom she had met on the set of Dark Shadows, became her second husband that same year; the marriage lasted two years.
In the early 1970s, Barrett married psychiatrist Harold Kaplan. Throughout that decade she appeared on several daytime dramas, including The Doctors, One Life to Live, and Ryan's Hope. Her final onscreen credit was the 1986 film Belizaire the Cajun. Harold Kaplan died in January 1998, after which Barrett made her ballet debut appearing in the New York production of Francis Patrelle's The Yorkville Nutcracker.
In 2005, Barrett married New York dentist Stuart S. Leichter, who died in Arizona in 2017 following a long illness. She returned to the role of Carolyn Stoddard in 2009 for the audio drama Curse of the Pharaoh and has since continued to appear in Dark Shadows audio productions from Big Finish Productions.
