About
Nan Knighton is an American poet, playwright, and lyricist born in Baltimore in 1947. Her father, Donald Proctor, was a physician, and her mother, Janice Proctor, was an artist. Knighton completed her secondary education at Bryn Mawr School in 1965, earned an undergraduate degree from Sarah Lawrence College, and later received a master's degree in creative writing from Boston University.
Before establishing herself in theater, Knighton contributed writing to Consumer Survival Kit, a television program produced by the Maryland Center for Public Broadcasting. Her transition to the stage brought her to Broadway, where she wrote both the libretto and lyrics for The Scarlet Pimpernel, which opened in 1997. The production earned her a Tony Award nomination for Best Book of a Musical in 1998. Her working relationship with Scarlet Pimpernel composer Frank Wildhorn extended beyond that production to include Camille Claudel in 2003 and additional lyrics for Rudolf in 2006.
Knighton also adapted the book for the Saturday Night Fever musical, which opened in the West End in 1998 before transferring to Broadway in 1999. Her work as a playwright includes Bad Dreams and Man With Two Hearts Found on Moon. She is married to producer and lawyer John Breglio.
