About
Myra Carter (October 27, 1929 – January 9, 2016) was an American actress who worked across stage, screen, and television over the course of a lengthy career. Born in Chicago in 1929 to an English father and a Scottish mother, Carter was raised in Scotland following her parents' separation. She was married to Don Garson, a writer.
Carter's stage work formed the core of her professional life, and she became particularly associated with the plays of Edward Albee. She appeared in the original casts of both Three Tall Women and All Over, and her performance in Three Tall Women earned her a Drama Desk Award, an Obie Award, an Outer Critics Circle Award, and a Lucille Lortel Award. She also received a Joe A. Callaway Award for her Off-Broadway performance in King John. Her Off-Broadway credits further included Abingdon Square, Helen, and The Secret Concubine. Carter was additionally known for her performances at Memphis' Front Street Theatre.
Her Broadway career spanned from 1956 to 1995. She appeared in Garden District, an evening of two Tennessee Williams plays comprising Suddenly Last Summer and Something Unspoken, as well as the play Major Barbara, the comedy Maybe Tuesday, the musical Georgy, and the comedy Present Laughter.
Beyond the stage, Carter made a film appearance in the 1999 Nicolas Cage thriller 8mm. Her television work included roles on Boris Karloff's Thriller, Frasier, and The Nanny. Carter died of pneumonia on January 9, 2016, in Manhattan at the age of 86.
