About

Murray Bartlett is an Australian actor born in Sydney, New South Wales, around 1971. At the age of four, he relocated with his family to Perth, Western Australia. He attended John Curtin College of the Arts in Fremantle, completing the drama program in 1988, after which he was admitted to the National Institute of Dramatic Art in Sydney.

Bartlett began his acting career in Australia, appearing in the series headLand and taking on the role of con man Luke Foster in the long-running soap opera Neighbours in 1993. In 2000, he moved to the United States, where early television work included a guest appearance on the HBO series Sex and the City and a four-episode arc on the Sci-Fi Channel series Farscape, playing D.K., the best friend of John Crichton. In 2006, he joined Hugh Jackman in the Australian touring company production of The Boy From Oz, Jackman's Broadway hit. The following year, Bartlett joined the cast of the CBS daytime soap opera Guiding Light as Cyrus Foley, a role he held from March 2007 until the show's cancellation in September 2009.

In 2017, Bartlett appeared on Broadway in M. Butterfly. That same year, he also portrayed a recurring role in the musical drama series Nashville.

Bartlett starred as Dominic "Dom" Basaluzzo in the HBO comedy-drama series Looking from 2014 to 2015, reprising the character in the 2016 television film Looking: The Movie. He later took on the central role of Michael "Mouse" Tolliver in the 2019 Netflix revival of Tales of the City. His profile rose significantly in 2021 when he was cast as Armond, a luxury resort manager and recovering drug addict, in the first season of the HBO dark comedy series The White Lotus, a role he secured through a self-tape audition. The performance earned him nominations at the Screen Actors Guild Awards and Independent Spirit Awards, wins at the AACTA Awards and Critics' Choice Television Awards, and a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie.

Bartlett received additional Primetime Emmy Award nominations for his subsequent television work, including his portrayal of Nick De Noia in the 2022 Hulu miniseries Welcome to Chippendales and his performance as Frank in the episode "Long, Long Time" of the HBO drama series The Last of Us in 2023. He has also appeared in the Apple TV+ series Physical, which ran from 2021 to 2023, and is set to appear in the second season of the Hulu anthology series Nine Perfect Strangers in 2025.

Bartlett came out as gay early in his career. He previously lived with his partner Matt in Provincetown, Massachusetts. He is a member of the jury panel for the Adelaide Film Festival, scheduled to run from October 15 to 26, 2025, in Adelaide, South Australia.
