About

Murphy Guyer is an American actor, playwright, writer, and director born on December 25, 1952, in Dover, Delaware. He grew up in rural eastern Maryland before relocating to New York City at nineteen to study at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts on an acting scholarship. During that period he developed an aptitude for writing jokes and comic sketches, which led to early professional work crafting material for stand-up comics and improv groups.

Guyer's playwriting career gained early recognition at the Humana Festival of New American Plays in Louisville, Kentucky, where his first play, Eden Court, premiered in the 1982–1983 season. He returned to the Humana Festival with The American Century in 1984–1985, and again with The Metaphor in 1987–1988. The American Century received subsequent productions at Solar Stage in Toronto in 1985 and at Theatre of Western Springs in Illinois in 2000. His play The Realists was cited among the Best Plays of 1988–1989, and his adaptation of The Emancipation of Valet de Chambre was recognized among the Best Plays of 1999–2000. His plays have been produced Off-Broadway and at regional theaters across the United States, Canada, Ireland, Britain, Europe, and Russia. Between 1996 and 2003, he served as Associate Artistic Director for Playwrighting at the Cleveland Play House, where his work Russian Romance was produced at the Drury Theater in 1998, and The Infinite Regress of Human Vanity was staged in 2002.

Guyer began his screen and television acting career in 1991, making his first appearance as Tommy Gallagher in the Law & Order episode "Heaven." His film work includes The Devil's Advocate and The Jackal, both released in 1997, as well as Arthur in 2011 and Joker in 2019.

On Broadway, Guyer appeared in a range of productions between 2002 and 2015, including The Graduate, The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, South Pacific, and Glengarry Glen Ross.
