About

Margaret Muriel de Melfort Martin-Harvey was born on 4 October 1891 in London to a theatrical family. Her father was Sir John Martin-Harvey, an Essex-born actor, and her mother was Angelita Helena Margarita (née de Silva), who was London-born. Her brother, Michael Martin-Harvey, was also an actor. She died on 15 December 1988 in Northwood, London.

Martin-Harvey began her stage career in 1911, making her debut in her father's production of Pelléas and Mélisande at the Lyceum Theatre in London. The following year she appeared in The Bear-Leaders. In 1916 she traveled to the United States, where she toured as Cyril Maude's leading lady. That same year she also appeared in two silent films, The Answer and The Hard Way, both released in 1916.

Her Broadway career spanned 1916 to 1920 and included four productions. She appeared in the musical Happy Go Lucky, as well as the plays Respect for Riches, The Luck of the Navy, and The Basker. She retired from the stage in 1939 at the outbreak of World War II.

Martin-Harvey married three times. Her first marriage was to Ronald Squire on 5 August 1914; the couple had a daughter together before divorcing in 1924. On 15 July 1926 she married actor Garry Marsh, who was eleven years her junior, and the two toured Australia together. Her third husband was Anthony Huntly-Gordon, who served as company and stage manager for the Agatha Christie thriller The Mousetrap at the Ambassadors Theatre for twenty-one years.
