About
Morton Selten was a British stage and film actor, born Morton Richard Stubbs on 6 January 1860 in Marlborough, England. He was the son of Morton Stubbs, a lawyer who died in 1877. Selten occasionally appeared in credits under the alternate spelling Morton Selton.
Selten began his acting career on the stage in 1878, working primarily in America. His Broadway career commenced in 1889, when he took on two roles that year: Clarence Vane in Mrs. Hargrove's Our Flat at the Lyceum Theatre, and Captain Heartsease in Shenandoah, Bronson Howard's drama set during the American Civil War. Over the following three decades, he appeared in approximately twenty-five Broadway productions, with his final Broadway credit dating to 1918. Among his many stage credits were Humpty Dumpty, the comedy A Kiss for Cinderella, The Little Minister, The Legend of Leonora, and The Amazons.
Selten's film career began in 1920 with his portrayal of the Marquis of Shelford in Branded. His final screen role was that of the King of the Land of Legend in The Thief of Bagdad, released in 1940. He died of a heart attack on 27 July 1939 while the film was still in production. In the months preceding his death, Selten had undergone two operations that left him physically weakened and unable to walk.
