About

Mort Dixon was an American lyricist born in New York City on March 20, 1892. A member of the Songwriters Hall of Fame, he began his songwriting career in the early 1920s and remained active through the 1930s. His Broadway credits include the revue The Laugh Parade.

Dixon's career got off to a strong start with his first published song, "That Old Gang of Mine," released in 1923. Throughout the following decade he worked with a number of prominent composers, including Ray Henderson, Harry Warren, Harry M. Woods, and Allie Wrubel. His output during this period produced a substantial catalog of well-known songs. Among them were "Bye Bye Blackbird" in 1926, "I'm Looking Over a Four Leaf Clover" in 1927, and "Nagasaki" in 1928. The early 1930s brought additional credits, including "Would You Like to Take a Walk?," "I Found a Million Dollar Baby (in a Five and Ten Cent Store)," "You're My Everything," and "River, Stay 'Way from My Door," all in 1930 and 1931. He continued writing into the mid-1930s, contributing "Flirtation Walk," "Mr and Mrs is the Name," and "The Lady in Red" between 1934 and 1935.

Dixon's composing activity slowed in the late 1930s, and he retired relatively early, settling in Westchester County, New York. He died on March 23, 1956, in Bronxville, New York.
