About
Morland Graham (8 August 1891 – 8 April 1949) was a British actor whose career encompassed stage and film work spanning more than three decades. Born in the late Victorian era, Graham built a reputation primarily as a character actor over the course of his long professional life.
Graham's stage career extended beyond performance into writing. He authored a one-act comedy titled C'est la Guerre, which received its first performance in October 1926 and was subsequently staged at the Scottish Community Drama Festival the following year. His theatrical work brought him to Broadway in 1937, where he appeared in George and Margaret.
On screen, Graham became particularly associated with a series of notable British film productions. His role in Alfred Hitchcock's Jamaica Inn in 1939 brought him wider recognition, and he went on to appear in Old Bill and Son in 1941. His casting in Bonnie Prince Charlie in 1948 came about after he stepped in to replace actor Will Fyffe. A final screen appearance, as the Biffer in Whisky Galore!, was released posthumously following his death in 1949.
In 1926, Graham married Elsie Cole, née Press. His final years were marked by declining health and what his wife described as nervous depression. He turned down an offer of stage work from Alistair Sim during this period, citing his condition as the reason. Graham died on 8 April 1949 after taking an overdose of aspirin while in ill health.
