About
Morgan James, born Morgan Grunerud on November 24, 1980, in Boise, Idaho, is an American singer, songwriter, and actress whose career spans Broadway, recording, and touring. She is the daughter of Allen Grunerud and Shellie Harwood, both educators and actors. The family relocated frequently during her childhood, moving from Pocatello, Idaho through Utah, Tennessee, and eventually settling in Modesto, California, where James attended Peter Johansen High School and graduated in 1999. She has a younger brother, Nicholas, who works as an avant-garde musician and comedian. Her parents' involvement in the performing arts drew her toward the stage from an early age, and she joined a choir during middle school. Her grandmother supported her musical development by purchasing a karaoke machine and funding singing lessons through her college years.
At seventeen, James set her sights on The Juilliard School in New York City. After auditioning, she was initially wait-listed and then rejected, but sustained correspondence with the head of admissions ultimately led to her acceptance as the seventh singer in her class, one beyond the program's standard six. She studied opera at Juilliard and earned a Bachelor of Music in Voice in 2003. During her time there, she also participated in a master class led by Broadway veteran Barbara Cook.
Following graduation, James spent several years searching for work that would draw on both her operatic and classical training. She made her Broadway debut in 2010 in The Addams Family, starring Nathan Lane and Bebe Neuwirth. The following year, she appeared in Frank Wildhorn's Wonderland and in the Broadway revival of Godspell. During rehearsals for Godspell in October 2011, she sprained her ankle and was sidelined during previews, returning to the production by November 2011 at the Circle in the Square Theatre. In 2013, she joined the cast of Motown: The Musical, portraying Teena Marie, and remained with the production until December of that year, when she departed to pursue a vocal performance tour. Her Broadway work continued with The Family and, in 2019, Kristin Chenoweth: For the Girls.
Alongside her stage career, James built a parallel life as a solo recording and performing artist. She regularly played New York City venues including Birdland, 54 Below, Rockwood Music Hall, and Le Poisson Rouge, often backed by musicians including Chris Fenwick, Matt Fieldes, and Damien Bassman. Her first solo release, Morgan James Live: A Celebration of Nina Simone, was recorded at Dizzy's jazz club in New York and issued through Epic Records in December 2012. Her first studio album, Hunter, produced by her husband Doug Wamble and comprising eleven tracks of original material, was released via Epic Records in 2014 and included a cover of Prince's "Call My Name," which Prince personally authorized for the record. On December 16, 2016, she released Blue, a cover album issued on the forty-fifth anniversary of Joni Mitchell's album of the same name. Her second studio album, Reckless Abandon, was independently released on April 7, 2017, through her own Hedonist Records label; it was her first album composed entirely of original material and incorporated elements of soul and R&B. A national headlining Reckless Abandon Tour launched on March 31, 2017, in support of the record.
In 2018, James released The White Album, her interpretation of the Beatles record on the occasion of its fiftieth anniversary. The following year, she joined Broadway performers Cynthia Erivo, Orfeh, Shoshana Bean, and Ledisi to record an all-female version of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Jesus Christ Superstar, excerpts of which were released in 2020 as an EP titled She is Risen. Lloyd Webber granted James permission in 2022 to release the full recording as Jesus Christ Superstar: Highlights from the All-Female Studio Cast Recording.
In 2020, James traveled to Memphis, Tennessee, to record Memphis Magnetic at Memphis Magnetic Recording Studio, capturing the album onto analog tape using vintage equipment. She returned to the same studio in 2021 to record A Very Magnetic Christmas, her first Christmas album, recorded live to analog tape before a small audience. Video footage from those sessions was released in December 2023 as Morgan James: The Christmas Special on YouTube. Her sixth studio album, Nobody's Fool, followed in 2023, returning to her rhythm and blues influences. In 2024, she recorded her second live album, Live at Antone's, at Antone's Nightclub in Austin, Texas. Her seventh studio album, Soul Remains the Same, arrived in 2025 and features her reinterpretations of rock and metal songs from the 1980s and 1990s filtered through a soul and R&B perspective. The album also includes a collaboration with Brass Against on a cover of Ozzy Osbourne's "No More Tears."
Since 2014, James has collaborated with the jazz collective Postmodern Jukebox, contributing cover recordings to their YouTube channel and joining them on tour. She lives in Harlem with her husband, guitarist and producer Doug Wamble, whom she married in the spring of 2016.
