About
Monte Hawley (October 25, 1901 – November 30, 1950) was an American actor born in Chicago, Illinois, whose career spanned stage and screen across several decades. The Philadelphia Tribune recognized him as one of the most prominent Black stage and screen actors of his era.
Hawley began his entertainment career as one of the original Lafayette Players. He studied under Richard B. Harrison before relocating to New York City, where he established himself as a Broadway performer. His stage work in New York spanned from 1923 to 1942 and included appearances in the musical Runnin' Wild, the musical Bamboola, the revue Blackberries of 1932, and Harlem Cavalcade.
Beyond Broadway, Hawley extended his career to Hollywood, where he appeared in films including Oscar Micheaux's first film production. He also served as both actor and stage manager for the original traveling production of the play Anna Lucasta.
Hawley died on November 30, 1950, in New York City.
