About

Charles Montague Discombe Sparrow, known professionally as C. Montague Shaw, was born on 23 March 1882 in Adelaide, South Australia, Australia. He died on 6 February 1968 in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles, California, at the age of 85, and was buried at Valhalla Memorial Park Cemetery.

Shaw began his performing career in Australian theatre before expanding his work to Britain and other parts of the British Empire. He subsequently pursued opportunities in the United States, where his career encompassed both stage and screen. His Broadway appearances were concentrated between 1929 and 1931, during which he appeared in five productions: Sherlock Holmes, Soldiers and Women, Give Me Yesterday, Colonel Satan, and As Good as New.

His screen career began with a role in the 1926 film The Set-Up. Over the following decades Shaw accumulated credits in more than 150 films, frequently taking on small supporting parts, many of which went uncredited. He became a recognizable presence in the film serial market, where he was often cast as professors and paternal figures. His most prominent screen role came in 1936, when he played Professor Norton in the serial Undersea Kingdom, which starred Crash Corrigan. Shaw continued working in film until 1949, when he appeared in his final screen role.
