About
Monique Sand is a French ballet dancer born on June 24, 1944, in Dakar, Senegal. Her early training took place at the Ecole de Danse Tanëeff in Toulon, France, and she made her professional debut with the Opera Ballet in Toulon. She subsequently performed with the Ballet of the Grand Théâtre de Genève and the Hamburg State Opera before advancing to the role that would define her career.
Sand joined the Dutch National Ballet as a principal dancer in 1971, a position she held until 1982. Her tenure coincided with what was recognized as the company's golden years, and she appeared on Broadway in 1978 during this period. Her work with the Dutch National Ballet encompassed a series of significant world premieres, including leading roles in Peter Van Dyk's Pinocchio in 1969, Glen Tetley's Chronochromie in 1971, and Hans Van Manen's Adagio Hammerklavier in 1973 and Sacre du Printemps in 1974. She also created roles in Rudi van Dantzig's Ramifications in 1973 and Four Last Songs in 1977.
Following her retirement from performing, Sand became a dance teacher at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague.
