Monica Dolan is an English actress born on 15 March 1969 in Middlesbrough, England, to Irish parents. She grew up in Woking, Surrey, alongside three older siblings and trained at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Her career has spanned stage, television, and film across several decades, earning her recognition in both the United Kingdom and internationally.

Dolan made her Broadway appearance in 1996, performing in A Midsummer Night's Dream. Her stage work has also included the role of Kate Hardcastle in She Stoops to Conquer, Regan in King Lear, and Masha in The Seagull, with the latter two productions featuring Ian McKellen. She played Loretta in Chalet Lines, written by Lee Mattinson, at the Bush Theatre, and in 2019 portrayed Karen Richards in the stage production of All About Eve, a performance that earned her the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role. In 2022, she took on the role of Sister Aloysius in Doubt: A Parable at the Chichester Festival Theatre.

On television, Dolan built a substantial body of work across British drama and comedy. Her earlier credits include Agatha Christie's Poirot, Dalziel and Pascoe, Tipping the Velvet alongside Rachael Stirling, Judge John Deed, and the ITV drama U Be Dead. In 2006, she portrayed the future Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother in the television drama Wallis and Edward. In 2011, she played British serial killer Rosemary West in the ITV drama Appropriate Adult, a performance that brought her the BAFTA TV Award for Best Supporting Actress. In 2013, she appeared in the BBC series Call the Midwife as twin sisters Meg and Mave Carter, and she played Senior Communications Officer Tracey Pritchard across three series of the BBC comedy W1A. In 2016, she appeared as Janet McIntyre in the BBC two-part drama The Witness for the Prosecution, adapted from an Agatha Christie work by Sarah Phelps. Her 2018 portrayal of Marion Thorpe in the miniseries A Very English Scandal earned her a second BAFTA nomination for Best Supporting Actress.

Dolan wrote and performed her debut one-woman play, The B*easts, at the 2017 Edinburgh Festival Fringe, where it won an Edinburgh Stage Award. The production subsequently transferred to the Bush Theatre in London for a limited run in 2018. In 2020, she appeared in the BBC One remake of Alan Bennett's Talking Heads, performing a monologue in the newly written episode "The Shrine," a role she reprised when the production was staged at London's Bridge Theatre in September of that year. Her 2021 film work included The Dig, in which she played May Brown, wife of archaeologist and astronomer Basil Brown, who discovered the Anglo-Saxon treasure at Sutton Hoo near Woodbridge, Suffolk.

In 2022, Dolan appeared alongside Eddie Marsan in the ITV drama The Thief, His Wife and the Canoe as Anne Darwin. She has also appeared in two episodes of the anthology series Black Mirror: "Smithereens" from Series 5 and "Loch Henry" from Series 6. In 2023, she played Carmel in the six-part Channel 4 comedy drama The Change and starred as British artist Audrey Amiss in Typist Artist Pirate King, directed by Carol Morley, a film that had its UK premiere at the Glasgow Film Festival in March and was released in October 2023. In January 2024, she portrayed subpostmistress Jo Hamilton in the four-part ITV drama Mr Bates vs The Post Office, based on the true story of the Horizon IT scandal, which was watched by an estimated 13.5 million viewers. In August 2024, she appeared as Ann Branson in the second series of the BBC drama Sherwood.

In March 2025, Dolan received nominations at the British Academy Television Awards in both the Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress categories, as well as a nomination for Leading Actor - Female at the Royal Television Society Awards for Mr Bates vs The Post Office. In August 2025, it was announced that she would be joining the cast of the BBC sitcom Smoggie Queens. Raised Catholic, Dolan has spoken publicly about the lasting influence of that upbringing on her outlook.
