About
Molly Shannon is an American actress, comedian, and Broadway performer born on September 16, 1964, in Cleveland, Ohio, to an Irish-American Catholic family. She grew up in Shaker Heights, Ohio, and later attended New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, graduating with a drama degree in 1987. When Shannon was four years old, on June 1, 1969, a car crash killed her mother, younger sister, and cousin; Shannon and her older sister survived. Her father, Jim, had been driving the family home from an all-day party during which he had consumed alcohol. In her 2022 memoir, Hello, Molly!, Shannon writes that no BAC report was taken and that her own belief is that her father fell asleep at the wheel.
Before achieving national recognition, Shannon worked as a hostess at Cravings restaurant on Sunset Boulevard and as a food demonstrator at a Gelson's supermarket in Marina Del Rey. Her first significant film role came in 1989, when she was cast as Meg in the horror remake of The Phantom of the Opera, starring Robert Englund. She made a brief appearance in the second season of Twin Peaks in 1991 and had minor roles in three episodes of In Living Color in 1993. Her major career break arrived in February 1995, when she was hired as a featured player on NBC's Saturday Night Live to replace Janeane Garofalo, who had departed mid-season. Shannon was among the few cast members retained when Lorne Michaels overhauled the show's roster for its twenty-first season, and she remained with the program until 2001.
During her tenure on SNL, Shannon developed several recurring characters, most notably Mary Katherine Gallagher, an awkward Catholic school student who aspires to be a musical superstar, which Shannon had originally created while studying at NYU. The character served as the basis for the 1999 feature film Superstar. She also appeared in a 1997 episode of Seinfeld as Sam, a co-worker whose habit of not swinging her arms while walking irritates Elaine Benes, and played the recurring role of neighbor Val Bassett on Will & Grace across five episodes. In 1998, she played Emily Sanderson in A Night at the Roxbury alongside fellow SNL cast members Will Ferrell and Chris Kattan. Additional film credits from her SNL years include Happiness (1998), Never Been Kissed (1999), How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000), Wet Hot American Summer (2001), and Osmosis Jones (2001). On May 12, 2007, Shannon hosted SNL, becoming the first former female cast member who had served under Lorne Michaels to do so.
Following her departure from SNL, Shannon continued working across film and television. She appeared in My Boss's Daughter (2003), the television remake of The Music Man (2003), and starred in the short-lived Fox series Cracking Up in 2004. In 2006, she appeared in Sofia Coppola's Marie Antoinette as Aunt Victoire, and in 2007 she took on a dramatic role in Mike White's Year of the Dog. She starred in the American adaptation of the Australian sitcom Kath & Kim in 2008, playing the title character Kath. In early 2010, she was cast in a recurring role on Fox's Glee as Brenda Castle, an astronomy and badminton teacher with a rivalry with Sue Sylvester. Film credits from this period include Igor (2008), Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby (2006), Evan Almighty (2007), and Hotel Transylvania (2012).
Shannon's Broadway career includes her appearance in the 2010 revival of Promises, Promises. On October 12, 2010, she replaced Katie Finneran in the role of Marge McDougall, performing alongside Sean Hayes and Kristin Chenoweth, and remained with the production through its closure on January 2, 2011.
On television, Shannon joined the HBO series Enlightened in 2013, playing Eileen, the love interest of Mike White's character, a role for which she received an Emmy nomination for outstanding guest actress. She co-starred in the HBO comedy Divorce from 2016 to 2019 opposite Sarah Jessica Parker and Thomas Haden Church, and appeared in The Other Two from 2019 to 2022. Her role in The White Lotus in 2021 and her work on the Showtime series I Love That for You in 2022, alongside fellow SNL alumna Vanessa Bayer, further extended her television presence. In 2024, she joined the fourth season of the Hulu comedy Only Murders in the Building, for which she won a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series.
Shannon's film work includes the Sundance premiere of Me and Earl and the Dying Girl (2015), directed by Alfonso Gomez-Rejon, and the Netflix film Private Life (2018), in which she played Cynthia. She won the 2017 Film Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance as Joanne Mulcahey in Other People, a Chris Kelly autobiographical film. Two additional films, The Little Hours and Fun Mom Dinner, premiered at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival. In 2018, Shannon and Will Ferrell co-hosted both the Rose Parade on Amazon Prime Video and HBO's broadcast of the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, appearing in character as fictional local television personalities Tish and Cord.
Beyond acting, Shannon published a children's book, Tilly the Trickster, on September 1, 2011, and released her memoir, Hello, Molly!, in 2022 with ISBN 9780063056251.
