About

Moi Yo Miller was the stage name of Mona Loretta Miller, an Australian entertainer born on 24 April 1914 in Geelong, Australia, who died on 18 September 2018. She built her career as a magician's assistant and illusionist working alongside the stage magician Dante, also known as Harry Jansen, throughout the 1930s and 1940s.

Miller's professional relationship with Dante began when she was still in her late teens, having caught his attention while performing in a musical revue in Melbourne. Dante had been specifically seeking an Australian recruit for his act, later remarking that he had seen more beautiful women per square block in Melbourne than anywhere else in the world. Miller dated Dante's son, Bill, and subsequently joined Dante's company, remaining with him for the duration of his performing career. She advanced rapidly within the act, becoming his principal assistant and a central figure in his touring stage show, Sim Sala Bim.

Miller's Broadway appearance came in 1940, when she performed in Sim Sala Bim. During the course of her career, she estimated that she had been sawed in half approximately 11,800 times. She was frequently billed as Australia's Most Beautiful Woman.

Beyond her performing work, Miller earned considerable respect within the professional magic community and has been widely cited as one of the foremost magic assistants in the history of the art form. In 1993 she received the Dragon Award, presented by the J. Marberger Stuart Foundation, and that same year was featured in Joel Ray's publication We Remember Dante. She appeared in the 2008 documentary Women in Boxes, which examined the contributions of assistants to the field of stage magic. Miller celebrated her 100th birthday in 2014. In June 2016, artist Michael Cassar created a public art mural depicting her likeness on the corner of James Street and Minns Lane in Geelong.
