About
Mohammed el Bakkar was a Lebanese tenor, oud player, and conductor who became notable both in the Arab world and in the United States. Born around 1913, he built an early career as a singer and appeared in a number of Arabic-language films, primarily within the Egyptian cinema industry. Among his screen credits was Mahmoud Zulfikar's 1951 production My Father Deceived Me.
In 1952, el Bakkar relocated to the United States and settled in Brooklyn, New York. He subsequently recorded multiple LPs of Arabic music for American audiences, releasing at least six volumes in the Music of the Middle East series on the Audio Fidelity label, including Port Said: Music of the Middle East, Vol. 1, Sultan of Bagdad: Music of the Middle East, Vol. 2, Music of the African Arab: Music of the Middle East, Vol. 3, The Magic Carpet: Music of the Middle East, Vol. 4, Dances of Port Said: Music of the Middle East, Vol. 5, and Exotic Music of The Belly Dancer: Music of the Middle East, Vol. 6. He also recorded Music for a Belly Dancer, likewise released on Audio Fidelity.
El Bakkar made his Broadway debut in 1954 in the musical Fanny, where he portrayed a singing oriental rug salesman in the production's Oriental bazaar scene. The show ran from 1954 to 1956. His appearance on Broadway represented a convergence of his vocal talents and his identity as a performer rooted in Middle Eastern musical traditions.
El Bakkar died on September 8, 1959, in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, at the age of 46. He collapsed while performing at an annual Lebanese American festival in Lincoln, Rhode Island, and the cause of death was a cerebral hemorrhage.
