Born Irwin Michnick on January 30, 1928, in Brownsville, Brooklyn, Mitch Leigh served in the United States Army before studying music at Yale University. He built a career in advertising, writing jingles for clients such as L&M cigarettes, Ken-L Ration dog food, and the Sara Lee Corporation, while simultaneously composing for Broadway shows. He married Renee Goldman, with whom he had a son, Andy, and later married Abby Kimmelman, with whom he had two children, Rebecca and David. The Songwriter's Hall of Fame honored him with the Contemporary Classics Award for "The Impossible Dream." On March 19, 2014, Broadway theater marquees were dimmed in his honor.
