About
Miriam Rose Silverman, born January 19, 1977, in Manhattan, is an American actress, acting coach, and theatre professor at NYU Tisch School of the Arts. The daughter of Anita Silverman, a teacher, and Michael Silverman, a journalist and former managing editor of the Associated Press, she grew up in New York City with two brothers, Joseph and Jeffrey. Her parents introduced her to Broadway shows during her childhood, sparking an early interest in performance. She was accepted to LaGuardia High School for the Performing Arts but chose instead to attend Bronx High School of Science, graduating in 1996. Silverman earned a B.A. in Literature and Southeast Asian Studies from Brown University in 2001, where her first stage role was Lady Croom in Tom Stoppard's Arcadia, and completed a Master of Fine Arts in Acting in 2005. During her undergraduate years she took a gap year to teach English in Hong Kong and worked at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden between semesters. In 2012, a fellowship with Theatre Communications Group brought her to London, where she trained at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art and with the Royal Shakespeare Company.
Silverman's regional theatre career spans multiple companies and cities. In 2002 she performed in the musical Hot Star, Nebraska at Speakeasy Stage in Boston, and in 2008 she appeared in a production of Hamlet at the Delacorte Theater. A repertory member of both the Shakespeare Theatre Company and Trinity Repertory Company, she received a Helen Hayes Award nomination in 2010 for her performance in The Dog in the Manger with the Shakespeare Theatre Company. She has also performed in summerstock productions in the Berkshires with companies including Berkshire on Stage and the Berkshire Playwrights Lab. In 2016, her portrayal of Mavis Parodus Bryson, the lead female character's older sister, in the Goodman Theatre's production of Lorraine Hansberry's The Sign in Sidney Brustein's Window earned her a Jeff Award nomination. She subsequently reprised that role in New York productions at the Brooklyn Academy of Music before bringing it to Broadway.
Silverman made her Broadway debut in 2017 playing Amy in Ayad Akhtar's Junk at the Vivian Beaumont Theater. In April 2023, she returned to Broadway in The Sign in Sidney Brustein's Window at the James Earl Jones Theatre, and her performance as Mavis Parodus Bryson earned her the Tony Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Play. Her Broadway career thus spans 2017 to 2023, encompassing both productions.
Beyond the stage, Silverman has built a notable screen presence. She holds a recurring role as Bernice in the Amazon series The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and appeared in Hulu's Fleishman Is in Trouble in 2022 and Amazon's Dead Ringers in 2023. Her film work includes Breaking, which premiered at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival, and Motherland, produced by Moving Picture Institute, in which she took her first leading film role in 2023.
In her personal life, Silverman married actor Adam Green in 2009; the two met while performing in Awake and Sing! at the Arena Stage, directed by Zelda Fichandler. Green, a Harvard graduate, serves as the East Coast Union organizer for SAG-AFTRA, and the couple has lobbied together for the Actors' Equity Fair Wage on Stage movement. Silverman is Jewish and a member of the Plaza Jewish Community Chapel.
