About

Miriam Nesbitt was an American stage and film actress born on September 14, 1873, in Chicago, Illinois, and died on August 11, 1954, in Hollywood. She was born Miriam Skanke and trained at the Stanhope-Wheatcroft Dramatic School before beginning her professional career under the stage name Miriam Nesbitt.

Nesbitt made her Broadway debut in 1899 and continued performing on stage through 1906. Her Broadway credits included The County Chairman, Old Limerick Town, The Road to Yesterday, The Embassy Ball, and Mary, Mary, Quite Contrary. Her stage career also included work outside of Broadway, and in 1904 she originated the role of Tiger Lily in a stage production of J. M. Barrie's Peter Pan, or the Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up. Her earliest professional stage work came through Daniel Frohman's production of The Tree of Knowledge.

Nesbitt transitioned to film in 1908 with Saved by Love and went on to appear in more than 120 silent films. A number of these productions featured her alongside actor Marc McDermott, who became a frequent co-star at Edison Studios. Among their shared credits were Aida (1911), an adaptation of Verdi's opera also starring Mary Fuller; The Declaration of Independence (1911), in which Nesbitt portrayed Mrs. John Adams opposite McDermott's Thomas Jefferson; and The Three Musketeers: Part 1 and Part 2 (1911), where she played the Queen to his Cardinal Richelieu. She also appeared in the 1913 serial Who Will Marry Mary? and the 1914 serial The Man Who Disappeared. On April 20, 1916, Nesbitt married McDermott. She retired from film in 1917, with her final screen appearance coming in Builders of Castles, which also starred her husband.
