About
Miranda de Pencier is a Canadian actress, film and television director, and producer born on August 20, 1968, in Toronto, Ontario. She is the daughter of magazine publisher Michael de Pencier and the sister of documentary filmmaker Nicholas de Pencier.
De Pencier began her career as an actress, with an early notable role as Josie Pye in the 1985 television film Anne of Green Gables and its subsequent sequels. During the 1989–90 season, she held a recurring role on the series Street Legal, portraying Jennifer Winston, a college student in a relationship with Chuck Tchobanian. Her screen work also includes an appearance in the film The Myth of the Male Orgasm. On stage, she performed in Canadian productions of Les Misérables and Aspects of Love, and in 1992 she appeared on Broadway in Aspects of Love.
In the late 1990s, de Pencier transitioned into producing, beginning in theatre before moving into film and television. Through her production company, Northwood Entertainment, she produced the 2005 film Cake, her first feature production. Subsequent producing credits include the films Pu-239, Adam, and Beginners, the television series Wild Roses, and the 2017 Anne of Green Gables adaptation Anne with an E.
De Pencier expanded her career further into directing, making her directorial debut with the short film Throat Song in 2011. The film earned the Canadian Screen Award for Best Live Action Short Drama at the 1st Canadian Screen Awards. Her feature directorial debut, The Grizzlies, premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2018, and that October she received the Directors Guild of Canada award for Best Direction in a Feature Film for the project.
