About
Mira Katherine Sorvino was born on September 28, 1967, in Manhattan, New York City, to Paul Sorvino, an actor and film director, and Lorraine Ruth Davis, a former actress who worked as a drama therapist for Alzheimer's disease patients. She has two siblings, Michael and Amanda, and is of Italian descent on her father's side. Sorvino grew up in Tenafly, New Jersey, where she participated in theater productions at Dwight-Englewood School and staged backyard plays alongside her childhood friend Hope Davis. Her mother's involvement in social causes, including participation in the 1963 March on Washington, shaped Sorvino's own commitment to activism from an early age.
An exceptional student, Sorvino was admitted to Harvard University, where she spent one year studying Mandarin Chinese as an exchange student through CIEE in Nanjing, China. She graduated magna cum laude in 1989 with a degree in East Asian studies and co-founded the Harvard-Radcliffe Veritones, one of Harvard's co-ed a cappella groups, in 1985. Her undergraduate thesis, completed that same year, examined anti-Africanism in China and attitudes toward Black students in the PRC.
Sorvino's screen career began with six episodes of the teen television series Swans Crossing. When the 1993 film Amongst Friends entered preproduction, she was hired as third assistant director and was subsequently promoted through several roles before being offered a lead part. Supporting roles in Robert Redford's Quiz Show and Whit Stillman's Barcelona followed before Woody Allen cast her in Mighty Aphrodite (1995), in which she played a good-natured prostitute. The performance earned her both an Academy Award and a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress and established her as an internationally recognized film actress. Her then-partner, director Quentin Tarantino, accompanied her to the Academy Awards ceremony where she received the honor.
Subsequent film credits included Romy and Michele's High School Reunion (1997) with Lisa Kudrow, Guillermo del Toro's horror film Mimic (1997), Lulu on the Bridge (1998), The Replacement Killers (1998), and Spike Lee's Summer of Sam (1999). She portrayed Daisy Buchanan in the 2000 television film The Great Gatsby and starred in The Triumph of Love (2002), an adaptation of the 1732 Marivaux play. That same year she appeared in WiseGirls alongside Mariah Carey and Melora Walters. Later film work included Gods and Generals (2003), Like Dandelion Dust (2009), and Sound of Freedom (2023), a film centered on human trafficking in South America.
On television, Sorvino portrayed Marilyn Monroe in the 1996 HBO film Norma Jean & Marilyn, earning a Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie as well as a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Miniseries or Television Film. She received a second Golden Globe nomination in that same category for her leading role in the Lifetime film Human Trafficking (2005), in which she played an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent. In 1995, she had portrayed Conchita Closson in the BBC miniseries The Buccaneers, based on Edith Wharton's final novel. Additional television credits include a guest appearance as psychiatrist Cate Milton in the "Frozen" episode of House in February 2008, a recurring role as Head Detective Betsy Brannigan on the final season of Psych in 2014, a role on the fourth season of Falling Skies, and a part in the Netflix series Lady Dynamite in 2016. In 2019, she joined the Netflix miniseries Hollywood, playing an actress whose career was derailed following a relationship with a studio head.
Sorvino made her Broadway debut in September 2025, taking on the role of Roxie Hart in the musical Chicago at the Ambassador Theatre. The production marked her first appearance on the Broadway stage.
In her personal life, Sorvino met actor Christopher Backus at a friend's charades party in August 2003. The two married on June 11, 2004, in a civil ceremony at the Santa Barbara, California, courthouse, followed by a hilltop ceremony in Capri, Italy. They have four children together — two daughters and two sons — and have appeared alongside each other in the films Indiscretion and Mothers and Daughters. The family resides in Los Angeles, California, and Sorvino has identified as a Christian.
Her role as entomologist Susan Tyler in Mimic led to an unusual scientific honor: entomologist Thomas Eisner named a defensive compound secreted by the sunburst diving beetle mirasorvone in recognition of her portrayal of the character.
Sorvino has maintained a long association with Amnesty International, becoming affiliated with the organization in 2004 and receiving its Artist of Conscience Award in 2006. From 2009 to 2012, she served as a United Nations Goodwill Ambassador focused on combating human trafficking and lobbied Congress on the issue as it related to Darfur. In 2017, she publicly disclosed the sexual harassment she experienced at the hands of producer Harvey Weinstein and stated her belief that her career suffered after she rejected his advances. Director Peter Jackson confirmed that Weinstein had blocked Sorvino and Ashley Judd from consideration for roles in The Lord of the Rings films. In 2019, Sorvino also disclosed publicly that she had been a victim of date rape. In May 2025, she revealed that a sequel to Romy and Michele's High School Reunion was in development at 20th Century Studios.
